Midweek Check-In: The Role of Mentorship in Innovation
It's the VIP Pass 🎟️ that NOBODY's talking about 👀
Hello, Innovator Extraordinaire! 👋
Hope your week is off to a great start 😁 ’cos it’s parte after parte over here
It’s Wednesday, and you know what that means…
You did a little ‘Whoop-whoop’ for a second there, didn’t you? 🤣🤣
[Is this how you want to do your own global domination, ehn, Dear Innovator?? 👀]….[Inserts bombastic shock]
Ok, Seriouslyyyyy, Builder Munchkin, we love Wednesdays ‘cos it’s our time to recharge and refocus, so strap in for your bi-weekly zen moment 🌱, courtesy of Consonance Club 🫶
Today, we’re diving into something every innovator needs but doesn’t always think about: mentorship.
Picture this: You’re climbing a mountain….
But instead of an actual mountain, this time, it’s you and your tech solution, and you’re still finding feet, even though you’ve been operating for a little while now 🥲
Wouldn’t it be easier 🤔 if someone who’s already made it to the top gave you a hand?
That’s what mentorship in Innovation is all about—a guiding hand, a voice of experience, and a source of wisdom.
TECHIES NEED MENTORS TOO (frame this if you will 😍)
Take, for instance, Dr. Wendy Okolo, the first Black woman 🫡 to earn a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas.
While she’s now making waves at NASA, her journey was shaped by mentors who believed in her potential and guided her through uncharted territory. Wendy now mentors young Africans in STEM, helping them overcome challenges and break into industries where representation is still lacking.
Or think about Nneka Eze, a key player in the impact investment space in Nigeria. Her work at VestedWorld has been instrumental in supporting startups that focus on social impact. Through mentorship, she’s empowering founders to navigate the complexities of scaling businesses that are not just profitable but also socially responsible.
And then there’s Funke Opeke, the powerhouse behind MainOne. Dear Innovator, she’s not only built one of Africa’s leading tech infrastructure companies but has also been a mentor to many women in tech, helping them break barriers and shatter ceilings.
These are just a couple of examples to show you 🫵 the propelling force of mentorship and the truth is this: In Africa’s fast-paced tech scene, having a mentor isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a must-have.
Mentors help you to see the big picture, they help you to avoid costly mistakes, and to connect you with the right people, while you do the work that you love.
They’re the ones who’ve been there, done that, and they can help you do it better, faster, and with fewer bumps along the way.
So, as you hustle through the rest of the week, ask yourself these important questions: Who’s in your corner? Who’s helping you navigate the twists and turns of innovation? They are the ones to hold on to like your life depends on it.
If you have a mentor, give them a shout-out in the comment section 👇👇 They’ll love it!! 💫💫
If not, it might be time to start looking for one.
Remember, even the greatest minds didn’t do it alone—they had guidance, they had support, and so do you.
Here’s to finding that mentor who’s going to help you, as you aim to reach new heights! 🏔️✨
