Agri-tech is sneaking up as the sleeper hit of 2025. It’s not as loud as AI or fintech, but it’s everywhere. Farmers have been ditching guesswork for data, and it’s paying off with bigger yields and less waste.
Why’s it hot now? Food security is a ticking clock in Africa, considering the teeming population, the outdated traditional farming methods that majority of people rely on and the continent’s erratic climate conditions. So far, tech companies like OCP Africa seem to be at the forefront of it. Although all the progress have simmering under the radar, but by year-end, it’ll be impossible to miss.
2. AI Is Not The Golden Child, Data Is
AI is everywhere in African tech conversations. Everyone has been hyping it as the game-changer, and sure, it’s got potential to leapfrog old systems. But here’s the spicy take: Critics and experts are of the opinion that without massive, quality datasets, it’s all just hype.
It’s not news that Africa’s data collection game is lagging—rural areas barely get counted, and urban data’s a mess of silos. Experts warn that African tech companies that are chasing AI glory might crash hard if they don’t figure out how to source or synthesize that raw fuel.
Remember when every other startup was a fintech unicorn-in-waiting?
Well, experts are of the opinion that we’ll be seeing a pivot to mergers and acquisitions in the coming days. This is because valuations are down, and everybody knows that survival is the best way to win the game. We’d have to watch for more of this as the year rolls on.
