What’s New…?
Well, it’s not exactly news and as you probably already know, Nigeria is home to a growing open-source community, with numerous opportunities for tech innovators to collaborate, learn, and contribute to impactful projects.
For those that don’t know: an open-source community refers to a group of people where everyone collaborates to build something useful, and others can use it or make additions to it to make it better.
We did a little digging to bring the latest scoop to your inbox. Check it out! 👇
1. Open Source Community Africa (OSCA)
OSCA is a prominent community driving the open source movement across Africa, with a strong presence in Nigeria.
Recently, OSCA launched their Chapter Leads community program. This program will enable selected local leaders to build and support active OSCA communities across African cities, connecting a global network of open-source advocates.
Dope, right? 😉
And for their future plans? OSCA plans to expand its reach to underserved regions in North, South, and East Africa. Interested techies can connect with them via their discord server to join local chapters and support open-source growth across Africa.
2. Google Developer Groups (GDG) Lagos
GDG Lagos is a community of developers, designers, and tech enthusiasts. They organize events like DevFest Lagos, which features sessions, workshops, and training.
This annual developer festival attracts thousands of participants and provides a platform for learning and networking.
For 2024, DevFest Lagos has been slated for the 15th and 16th of November, marking the group’s 11th anniversary of innovation, learning, and community in tech. Attendees can connect with peers, industry leaders, and potential collaborators throughout the event.
Yay!! 🥳🥳
3. GitHub Africa
Nigeria has a significant presence on GitHub, with a growing number of contributors.
Nigerian devs are also actively involved in open source projects, contributing to the global open source ecosystem. This involvement not only helps improve their skills but also enhances the visibility of Nigerian tech talent on a global scale.
Since last year, GitHub Africa launched their All In Africa program and this initiative is dedicated to making open source education accessible to everyone across the continent. The program offers comprehensive training, mentorship, vibrant community engagement, and career-focused experiential opportunities. Participants can enhance their tech skills through open source courses, practical training, and hackathons.
It’s a great opportunity for African devs to connect with tech professionals and collaborate on impactful open source projects.
Soooo, which of these will you be leveraging? 😉
