Hello 👋 Innovators!
We have good news for you as always, and it's that our newsletters will continue to inspire and support innovation (and even better!) come rain 🌧️ come shine 🌙.
We are here for you!
About three months ago, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) suffered a terrible fall from grace and has since then been featured in every ethical breach comic.
Today, we'll be discussing some ethical breaches in tech beyond Silicon Valley Bank (SVB)
So as innovators in tech, we'll be decoding right from wrong innit?, but before then, can you decode this?…
…Ohh 😯 that didn't end well, did it?
Now, to the issue of the day, we won't exactly start by blaming you, but sometimes we give too much power 💪 to websites and tech companies. So many internet users are not worried about malware, because we have a lot of information about ourselves online so much that we stop caring.
Just Google your name and you'll see what we are talking about 😏
We'll start with a quick question.
How many cookies 🍪 have you accepted from different websites in this past week?
Let's go first. We have accepted all the cookies 🍪 that came our way on every website 😭. After all, they pop up in the very middle of the screen, such that we have no choice 🤷♀️, or do you have a different experience?
…but what are these cookies to start with?
Everyone has seen the website banners that ask you if you’ll allow cookies on your browser or not. But what exactly does this mean and what are these cookies? Well, to begin with, they are essential to the modern internet experience.
Cookies (often known as internet cookies) are text files with small pieces of data — like a username and password — that are used to identify your computer as you use a network. Specific cookies are used to identify specific users and improve their web browsing experience.
That said, data stored in a cookie is created by the server upon your connection.
There are different types of cookies, such as essential cookies, preference cookies, statistics and analytical cooking, marketing cookies and so much more.
… so are all cookies safe?
Not all cookies are inherently harmful, but their safety depends on their purpose, how they are implemented, and your perspective on privacy. Here's a breakdown:
Essential Cookies: These cookies are generally safe as they are necessary for basic website functionality. They don't store personal information and are often session cookies that are deleted when you close your browser.
Marketing Cookies: While not inherently harmful, marketing cookies can raise privacy concerns. They track your online behavior for targeted advertising, which some users find invasive.
This is one cookie to watch out for 👀.
Third-Party cookies: These can be a privacy concern. Third-party cookies from advertisers and tracking companies are often used for profiling and may not be safe in terms of privacy.
Since a third party is now involved, it might raise eyebrows so you have to beware.
Statistical or Analytical Cookies: These are typically safe from a security standpoint as they collect anonymous data for website analysis. However, there might be privacy concerns if they are used to track and profile individuals without consent.
This was supposed to be geared towards the ethical lapses of various companies in tech, however, it quickly became about cookies 🍪 , but no worries that's why we have a part 2.
Innovator Of The Week
Joseph Ololobou, fondly known as Joseph is the founder of Shoppy Ng.
Let's take a minute to understand the inception of Shoppy Ng.
…Just like every success story this one also starts with an idea 💡. Here you have it in the very words of the founder.
“Shoppy was inspired after I saw bolt work for the first time and I was like, imagine being able to order from the closet stores around you, through geolocation technology that bolt already uses. That would be magical.”
Wondering 🤔 what Shoppy Ng is?
Shoppy delivers all kind of goods and services like food, pharmaceuticals, groceries, barbers, gadgets, hairstylists and many more to customers in minutes. Customers order from local vendors with close proximity to them and this makes the quick delivery of this goods and services possible.
Joseph had an Eureka 💡 moment and that was the day he realized that everything around him was created and crafted by humans and that he himself could create and craft society the way he wants. His greatest as an innovator achievement has been creating his own start up Shoppy.
To that innovator still sitting on the fence here's what he has to say “Like the Nike phrase ‘just do it’ if you lay bricks little by little everyday, very soon you will build a mountain”
