Breaking The Barriers🙅🏽♀️: Celebrating the Innovation by Women in Tech 💻
Women who tech 💻: Meet some trailblazers 🧗
Hello Dear Innovator 👋🏽
It is the third month of the year already 😊 Pheww 😤, how time truly flies 🕊. It feels just like yesterday when we were screaming “Happy new year 🎇🎉” and committing to new year goals and resolutions.
We even took it a step further here at Consonance and shared some bitter-sweet pills 💊for success this year. It has been an innovative joyful ride and we only just getting started. March means a lot, and it is one of our favorite months of the year, it is Women’s history month.
It is Women’s history month because we get to celebrate International Women’s day (IWD), Mother’s day, Women’s day and so many special days for women. The whole month is about giving women from various walks of life their flowers and the recognition due whether presently or historically for work well done in various fields.
Here at Consonance, women’s history month means celebrating innovative women in tech. Once again, welcome to March and to commemorate women’s history we'll discuss some of the top two innovative women in tech (one from the past, one from the present).
As we get ready to read about the Mary Slessors and Oprah Winfreys of the world of technology, let’s have a good laugh from tech Twitter.
And a reality true-life talk on the streets of tech
Katerine Johnson
If you have seen Hollywood’s production “Hidden Figures” starring Taraji P Henson and two other brilliant black actresses, you might have an idea of who Katherine Johnson is. She and two other NASA employees were portrayed and duly credited for their expertise in their fields, and for their role in history.
Katerine Coleman Johnson, born August 26, 1918, was an American mathematician, who would eventually become famous for playing a historical role in several space trips like the moon landing. Katherine was referred to as a “human computer”, for her speed and accuracy in calculations of space trajectories with little technology at the time.
She was a child genius, as she showed strong mathematical abilities from a young age. At the time, Greenbrier County where she lived did not offer public schooling for African American students past the 8th grade. Her parents arranged for their children to attend high school at Institute, West Virginia. She graduated high school at the age of 14 and was matriculated into a historically black college.
After deciding on a career as a research Mathematician, which was a difficult field for an African American Woman, she was unstoppable in her quest for innovative success despite so many difficulties and the rest they say is history.
She had a 33-year career at NASA, where her job included calculating trajectories, launch windows, and emergency return paths for spaceflights.
Katherine Johnson is an innovative example of making it despite all odds, and when the system seems to be biased against you as a result of your skin color or background.
Dr. Fei Fei Li
Born and raised in Beijing, China in 1976 Dr. Fei Fei Li is a leading voice in the artificial intelligence space today. If you blame AI for the massive layoffs that the tech industry has been experiencing, then you might have a lot of questions for this AI genius.
She moved to the US, where she attended Princeton University and obtained her bachelor's degree in physics. Li also earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Caltech in 2005, where her research was focused on computer vision, which was bout computers interpreting human images.
She has an incredible and reputable work portfolio. She joined the faculty of the Computer science department at Stanford University. It was no surprise when she founded the Standford Artificial intelligence lab (SAIL), as a result of her obvious love for AI while also being a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion in artificial intelligence. She co-founded AI4ALL, and the list could go on and on about her contribution to AI tech.
She went on to join Google Cloud in 2018 as the Chief Scientist of AI/ML, where she leads efforts to develop and apply AI technologies to a range of industries and applications. Her job description simply put could portray her as one of the Google geniuses, actively discovering ways that robots can do things that once upon a time only humans could do.
Li is a recipient of numerous awards, for her work in research and advocacy. she has also been named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2018. She is an innovative example of being successful and making a way for people like her, through her work in advocacy.
